XI: True Grit (Henry Hathaway, 1969)
XII: Rooster Cogburn (Stuart Millar, 1975)

Two of those have-I-seen-them-before? westerns. I've seen the Coen brothers remake, and I have to say I'm not at all certain whether John Wane or Jeff Bridges is better. Wayne comes with a lot of baggage, but you can comprehend his dialogue. The Coen brothers version is probably a bit better - better shot? But at the distance of a year or so, I couldn't tell you the differences. I suspect the kid in the remake (Hailee Steinfeld) is better than the original (Kim Darby), and Glenn Campbell is no Matt Damon... Cogburn is the bounty hunter in search of the man who killed the kid's father, and in search of self-redemption. Wayne steals the show, frankly.

Rooster Cogburn was a rewatch, African Queen meets The Searchers, though Wayne is no Bogart (but imagine Lee Marvin in the role; perhaps that's too easy?). Hepburn has the chemistry that Darby lacks - and forty years more experience - as Cogburn is the bounty hunter in search pf the man who killed, well, yanno, again, again. Hepburn steals the show.
